Please join us for the Iowa Learning Farms webinar at noon CDT, Wednesday, May 22, featuring Abigail Schulte, graduate student, Iowa State University. Schulte’s research focuses on the intersection of waste management and bioprocessing, ranging from anaerobic digestion to wastewater treatment to algal biofuel.
In the webinar, “Solid-State Anaerobic Digestion of Prairie Biomass and Beef Manure,” Schulte will introduce the current state of research in sustainable energy generation utilizing solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) to efficiently generate biogas. She will illustrate differences between SS-AD and more conventional approaches that typically require more water and lower organic loading rates to achieve similar methane generation rates. Schulte will discuss the potential to combine this method with efforts from the C-CHANGE (Consortium for Cultivating Human And Naturally reGenerative Enterprises) project to valorize prairie biomass, presenting an opportunity to develop small-scale systems that are both economically and environmentally beneficial. She will also offer insights into barriers to adoption of SS-AD, potential mitigation approaches, and process optimizations which have improved methane yield through co-digesting prairie biomass and beef manure.
“Understanding and communicating potential economic benefits is crucial when advocating for regenerative agricultural practices and sustainable approaches,” said Shulte. “Participants in this webinar should come away with a greater technological understanding of solid-state anaerobic digestion and the potential it has for generating biogas from manure and herbaceous feedstocks.”
