DNR Cover Crop Seed Program Utilizing Public Lands is Blooming

Please join us for the Iowa Learning Farms webinar at noon CDT, Wednesday, June 12, featuring Adam Schnieders, water quality resource coordinator, and Justin Clark, wildlife biologist, with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Schnieders was a leader in the development of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy and is currently working across the state government to affect improved water quality, especially in the area of nutrient reduction. Clark provides wildlife management services throughout Hardin, Grundy, Butler and Floyd counties in Iowa and the Cedar-Wapsi Wildlife Unit.

In the webinar, “DNR Cover Crop Seed Production Project,” Schnieders and Clark will review the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pilot project launched in 2019 to produce cover crop seed on DNR-managed land in support of water quality and wildlife initiatives. They will discuss the many lessons learned through four harvests and will share details about project outcomes and plans for the future.

“Providing cover crop seed for use on DNR-managed public lands enhances water quality and may provide wildlife benefits,” said Schnieders. “These crops reduce soil erosion, filter pollutants from runoff, and create habitats for diverse species, thereby contributing to a healthier and more resilient ecosystem.”

“I hope participants of the webinar will leave with a deeper understanding of the benefits that cover crops offer toward enhancing biodiversity and water quality, our work with cooperating farmers, as well as practical knowledge on producing cover crop seed varieties,” added Clark.

Webinar participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
