Crop Insurance for Relay Intercropping and Double Cropping is Here

Please join us for the Iowa Learning Farms webinar at noon CDT, Wednesday, June 26, featuring Sheila Backer, assistant vice president – Crop Insurance Underwriting, Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa. Backer is a 16-year veteran of the crop insurance industry and serves on two National Crop Insurance Services (NCIS) committees working on efforts to create, adjust, and research crop insurance guidelines in whole-farm revenue protection, as well as perennial and specialty crop areas. She grew up in Iowa, giving her a strong understanding of the importance of agriculture in Iowa and has spent most of her professional career advocating for farmers and supporting the Iowa agriculture industry

In the webinar, “How Crop Insurance Ties into Relay and Double Cropping Practices,” Backer will address some common questions and concerns about crop insurance for newer and innovative cropping systems in Iowa. She will also provide an overview of federal crop insurance, what it is and why farmers need it to continue farming. Backer will share details of crop insurance in Iowa and highlight important dates and deadlines in the state. Backer will also highlight new crop insurance options for farmers who are considering or already practicing newer farming systems such as relay intercropping and double cropping.

“Crop insurance programs continue to evolve, and the availability of insurance for double and relay cropping practices is expanding in Iowa,” said Backer. “It is important for farmers to fully understand the rules of these newer coverage offerings as well as how they can benefit from this type of insurance coverage. I hope that participants in this webinar walk away with the knowledge to have a meaningful conversation with their crop insurance agent about whether it could be beneficial for them to insure their double or relay crops.”

Webinar participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
